The Paderborner Squash Club (PSC) is the most traditional club in the whole of
Germany and for a long time it has been the top address for squash. Developed
from a group of players in 1977, the official founding of the club was in March
1979. Therefore, in 2004 the PSC celebrated its 25th anniversary. In 1984, the
location of the club changed to the Ahorn Sportpark, an ideal example of a
multifunctional sport facility.
As the tenant of the 10 court facility the PSC with its unique constitution of
its members being in control has succeeded in establishing competitive squash at
the highest level over the years. Besides the connection of sport, school and
job the PSC attaches great importance to youth development. About 40 youngsters,
boys and girls are active members in the junior squads and talent development
groups. The youth work has been acknowledged twice with the award of the “Grünes
Band”, a decoration from the Dresdner Bank in co-operation with the German
Sports Association for the best junior development work in the country.
With regard to its growth, the interplay between the Ahorn-Sportpark and the PSC
is therefore of particular importance. For competitive athletes, the
Ahorn-Sportpark offers the ideal training facility. The success of the PSC
squash players has put the Ahorn-Sportpark on Germany’s sporting map. Events
such as the World Junior Squash Championships and the National Championships
have made their contribution to this recognition.
Emanating from the junior section of the PSC,
excellent players such as Hansi Wiens, Edgar Schneider, Stefan and Simone
Leifels have emerged. Since 1986, the PSC Youth team has won the German Team
Championships over eight times. Moreover, a number of National individual
championships have been chalked up and defended. Over the years Paderborn has
also become a centre of excellence for squash; as a role model the PSC is
involved additionally with the promotion of school sport and the spotting of new
talent.
The Paderborn men’s Team has consistently been represented in the Premier Squash
League since 1984. The team had already achieved great success by winning the
National Championship titles in 1999, 2000 and 2003 as well as gaining third
place in the European Club Championships 2002. This success was crowned by
winning the European Club Championships in Odense, Denmark, in September 2003
and by successfully defending the title in Linz 2004. With Peter Nicol in the
team (the former world champion and number one in the world ranking list),
