The Paderborner Squash Club (PSC) – The Promoter


The Paderborner Squash Club (PSC) is the most traditional club in the whole of Germany and for a long time it has been the top address for squash. Developed from a group of players in 1977, the official founding of the club was in March 1979. Therefore, in 2004 the PSC celebrated its 25th anniversary. In 1984, the location of the club changed to the Ahorn Sportpark, an ideal example of a multifunctional sport facility.
As the tenant of the 10 court facility the PSC with its unique constitution of its members being in control has succeeded in establishing competitive squash at the highest level over the years. Besides the connection of sport, school and job the PSC attaches great importance to youth development. About 40 youngsters, boys and girls are active members in the junior squads and talent development groups. The youth work has been acknowledged twice with the award of the “Grünes Band”, a decoration from the Dresdner Bank in co-operation with the German Sports Association for the best junior development work in the country.

With regard to its growth, the interplay between the Ahorn-Sportpark and the PSC is therefore of particular importance. For competitive athletes, the Ahorn-Sportpark offers the ideal training facility. The success of the PSC squash players has put the Ahorn-Sportpark on Germany’s sporting map. Events such as the World Junior Squash Championships and the National Championships have made their contribution to this recognition.
 

European Cup Winners 2003 and 2004Emanating from the junior section of the PSC, excellent players such as Hansi Wiens, Edgar Schneider, Stefan and Simone Leifels have emerged. Since 1986, the PSC Youth team has won the German Team Championships over eight times. Moreover, a number of National individual championships have been chalked up and defended. Over the years Paderborn has also become a centre of excellence for squash; as a role model the PSC is involved additionally with the promotion of school sport and the spotting of new talent.

The Paderborn men’s Team has consistently been represented in the Premier Squash League since 1984. The team had already achieved great success by winning the National Championship titles in 1999, 2000 and 2003 as well as gaining third place in the European Club Championships 2002. This success was crowned by winning the European Club Championships in Odense, Denmark, in September 2003 and by successfully defending the title in Linz 2004. With Peter Nicol in the team (the former world champion and number one in the world ranking list), Stefan Leifels, Edgar Schneider, Lars Osthoff and Lennart Osthoff (Juniorteam) who have all represented their Country recently.
